take flight poster

OBJECTIVE

For this project, I was to create an 11 x 17-inch illustration for a gig poster to promote the client’s, Guitar Hero, live “TAKE FLIGHT” event for the band Within Temptation. The illustration must also fit a 3 x 11-inch Banner and 6 x 6-inch CD Album Cover. The Poster must include the date and location of the venue.

MEANING & INSPIRATION

For my illustration, I based it on Within Temptation’s most recent albums and a few other artists with a similar, painterly style. I really enjoyed the colors chosen for Within Temptation’s album, Ritual, which has a cyan and orange color scheme. So, I wanted to pick something similar but keep the ethereal feel to my poster, and I ultimately chose a de-saturated purple and vibrant yellow orange. Their current album art has become surreal but always includes a mysterious or inhuman figure, so I decided to include an angelic character but push it a little more in the direction of unnatural by combining the appearance of biblical angels with multiple wings and eyes with the modern angel design. I included the blindfold on the figure to emphasize the eyes in her torso and to reference to their The Heart of Everything album.
